‘Norman Bates’ in ‘Psycho’ (1960)

Universal

Nearly 57 years after its release this groundbreaking Alfred Hitchcock classic might seem tame compared to more recent fare like 2000’s ‘American Psycho’ and the exploits of its own madman “Patrick Bateman”, but no list would be complete without the film and the character who changed a genre and exposed middle America and the world to a dark crevasse in their society.

Based loosely on the story of real life 1950s Wisconsin murderer and body-snatcher Ed Gein, ‘Psycho’ shocked audiences with some of the most iconic visuals in film history, and with the help of a nuanced performance from Anthony Perkins introduced the world to iconic film psychopath ‘Norman Bates’, who also boasted a splash of paranoid schizophrenia and some serious mommy issues.

Directed by Alfred Hitchcock and starring Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh and John Gavin among others.

Genre: Horror, Thriller
