Retrospective 2018- A Year in Film

Spread the love

March

Once again the start of spring brought UK audiences an eclectic mix of releases, led by Hollywood blockbusters from Kaiju monster sequel Pacific Rim: Uprising and the Tomb Raider cinematic reboot, to Steven Spielberg’s pop-culture nostalgia fest Ready Player One and pleasant comedy surprise Game Night. The release slate was balanced by smaller studio and independent fare like Lynne Ramsay’s vigilante thriller You Were Never Really Here and Ruben Östlund’s Swedish 2017 Palme d’Or winner The Square, plus plus Steven Soderbergh’s experimental iPhone-shot thriller Unsane and Wes Anderson’s wonderful stop-motion animation Isle of Dogs.

And the Award Goes To…

The final stop for the awards season railway brought the great and the good of cinema to Hollywood later than usual this year, thanks to ABC’s coverage of the winter Olympics, as the 90th Academy Awards rolled into town with no clear front-runner, but with Guillermo del Toro’s realist fantasy creature-feature romance The Shape of Water taking home the most awards and the biggest prize of the night.

Once again we can endlessly debate who should have won what and whether any of it matters, but the Oscars can make careers and give publicity to films that normally wouldn’t get much, not to mention celebrating legitimate achievements in filmmaking, so here are some of 2018’s notable winners;

Best Picture

Best Director

Best Cinematography

Actor and Actress in a Leading Role

  • Gary Oldman for Darkest Hour

and

Best Supporting Actor and Actress

and

Best Screenplay (Original)

Best Screenplay (Adapted)
