Retrospective 2015 – A Year in Film

2015 has been a another strong and varied year for film, from comic-book titans and quirky comedies to powerful dramas and captivating indies.

It’s also been a big year for the Action/Adventure blockbuster, from disappointments like Jupiter Ascending’ and Terminator Genisys’ to triumphant box-office goliaths like Jurassic World’ and Spectre’, not to mention the most anticipated film ever in Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ and the brilliant genre re-defining Mad Max: Fury Road’.

FilmPhonic chronicles the people, events and films that have shaped the movie world in the last 12 months, let’s hope 2016 has at least as much to offer.

2015YIF_ArticlePic1January in the UK typically means a bunch of films, some already released in the US at the end of the previous year, coming to UK screens in the lead up to the awards season and the Oscars in particular.

It means we get to see some of the best and most original films of the year in one month, this year was no exception with the likes of  Alejandro González Iñárritu’s unique award collector Birdman’ and our pick for best 2014/2015 film Damien Chazelle’sWhiplash’, as well as other films that would impact the Academy Awards.

Best Director- Motion Picture

Best Performance by an Actor and Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy

and

Best Performance by an Actor and Actress in supporting role in a Motion Picture

2015YIF_ArticlePic3Sadly but inevitably, every year we lose people who made an impact on the movie industry, January saw the passing among others, of Swedish starlet Anita Ekberg (83) (La Dolce Vita) as well as British stage & screen actor Khan Bonfils (42) (Batman Begins)  and British actress Geraldine McEwan (82) (Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, The Magdalene Sisters).
