April was another mixed bag of a month with thrillers like Tom Hardy’s soviet-era mystery ‘Child 44′ and Keanu Reeves’ return to action form with ‘John Wick’, as well as the Russell Crowe WWI drama ‘The Water Diviner’ and Noah Baumbach’s age comedy/drama ‘While We’re Young’, all rounded off by the first of several huge blockbusters this year.

The month also saw the UK release of the first of this year’s anticipated big action blockbusters with the return of Iron Man, Thor et al. in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’. In his second and supposedly last Marvel movie, writer/director Joss Whedon had the daunting task of keeping this ungainly unstoppable train on the tracks while crafting an entertaining epic with mass appeal which gives every character an opportunity to shine.
The result was a slightly charm-less but thoroughly entertaining superhero romp which adds momentum to the ever expanding and increasingly crowded Marvel “Cinematic Universe”, soon to be thrown into further turmoil in ‘Captain America: Civil War’, out late April in the UK.

April signaled the loss, among others, of veteran actor and Juliette Lewis dad Geoffrey Lewis (79) (Double Impact, Maverick), as well as British stage & screen actor Nigel Terry (69) (The Lion in Winter, Excalibur) and Oscar-winning ‘Lord of the Rings’ cinematographer Andrew Lesnie (59) from a heart-attack.
