Retrospective 2014 – A Year in Film

2014 has been a great year for film, from varied action blockbusters to comic-book titans to quirky comedies, in particular it’s truly been the “year of the thriller” with diverse contributions to the genre from ’71 and Fury to Gone Girl and Nightcrawler.

FilmPhonic chronicles the people, events and films that have shaped the movie world in the last 12 months, let’s hope 2015 has at least as much to offer.

2014YIF_ArticlePic1January in the UK typically means a bunch of films, previously released in the US at the end of the previous year, coming to UK screens in the lead up to the awards season and the Oscars in particular.

It means we get to see some of the best and most original films of the year in one month, this year was no exception with the likes of Steve McQueen’s powerful and beautifully brutal 12 Years a Slave and Scorcese’s anarchic masterpiece The Wolf of Wall Street as well as other films that would impact the Academy Awards.

Best Motion Picture – Drama

  • 12 Years a Slave

Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy

  • American Hustle

Best Director- Motion Picture

  • Alfonso Cuarón for Gravity

Best Performance by an Actor and Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama

  • Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyers Club

and

  • Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine

Best Performance by an Actor and Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy

  • Leonardo DiCaprio for The Wolf of Wall Street

and

  • Amy Adams for American Hustle

Best Performance by an Actor and Actress in supporting role in a Motion Picture

  • Jared Leto for Dallas Buyers Club

and

  • Jennifer Lawrence for American Hustle

2014YIF_ArticlePic3Sadly but inevitably we lose people who made an impact on the movie business, January saw the passing from Alzheimer’s of 3-time Academy Award winning producer Saul Zaentz (Amadeus, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, The English Patient) at the age of 92.
